Benjamin FranklinThe good Education of Youth has been esteemed by wise Men in all Ages, as the surest Foundation of the Happiness both of private Families and of Common-wealths.

Almost all Governments have therefore made it a principal Object of their Attention, to establish and endow with proper Revenues, such Seminaries of Learning, as might supply the succeeding Age with Men qualified to serve the Publick with Honour to themselves, and to their Country

  1. I notice that he said “…such Seminaries of Learning, as might supply the succeeding Age with Men qualified to serve the Publick with Honour to themselves, and to their Country.”

A Seminary by definition is a theological college, or divinity school, or an institution of higher learning for educating students in theology.

I’m suggesting that if we are going to have people serve the public with honor, then by necessity, they will have to have learned, along with other things, God’s Word.

So, it is for the good of the country, as well as for the people themselves, to have an educated populace.

  4. I agree with an educated populace, but I think we can do without the Department of Education. I would rather have it at the State level than the Fed level. The Fed has corrupted our children for decades, and now look at the situation we are in!

  5. Pyle has it right – Education should be a strictly local and state government issue. The Feds only contribute 8% anyway, but it has a disproportionate influence. Our country has more than doubled spending on education since 1970 (in real terms, inflation adjusted) with absolutely no improvement in student performance. In fact, we probably have more “failure factories” now than 40 years ago.

Charles and Ed, and the DOE is one of the reasons. A more recent one is NCLB. You will find plenty fo teachers like me who do not care for either one.
