The Age of Revelation by Elias Boudinot

The substance of “The Age of Revelation” was written soon after the first appearance of the Age of Reason, in this country. The original design, was merely to guard a beloved child and intimate friend, against any skeptical doubts that might have been produced, by the many conversations that daily took place, when that book was first handed about in this city.

It was, at first, designed to be confined within the limits of a few page. Soon after, having occasion to review the subject, it opened itself in such a manner, that before I was aware of it, the bulk increased to a manuscript of a considerable size.

It is written out of an anxious desire that our country should be preserved from the dreadful evil of becoming enemies to the religion of the Gospel, which I have no doubt would lead to the dissolution of government and the bonds of civil society .

What the author principally hopes for, is, to persuade current and future generations, and those who are but beginning to doubt or waver, to make the divine Scriptures their serious and attentive study ; and seek to understand the principles of the Gospel, before they pretend to judge of them, or to renounce them as untrue, or of but trifling importance. Thus they would do in any other science, and they cannot reasonably adopt a different practice in religion.

Pleased to see your inclusion of Elias Boudinot’s work in this repository of foundational and influential documents of our Republic. Contemporary presentations/studies rarely include or reflect upon the influences of Christian pulpits on the formation of our nation; not to mention the utter lack of consideration of the actual content of what came from those pulpits or the related thoughts of those influential Christian thinkers. Truly, our Republic would not have arisen (nor, do I suspect, will it continue) but from the principles of Christianity. You are most honest, insightful, and helpful in doing so.

I’m glad you like our work! Also agree that today’s educators gloss over the Christian influence in our founding.

Thank you for taking the effort to make these publications available. America is lost and can only be revived with the truth. I pray that the truth of Jesus Christ will invade the heart of the enemy and change them in order that they might Love the Lord and live fruitfully within society. We lead orderly lives by the disposition into which God allows to wander. The light of Love and Truth must be our guide.

The Federalist Papers admins do a wonderful job of going through our founding documents (and sometimes others) to find pertinent, timely and always thought-provoking pieces. I have discovered a new admiration for Patrick Henry from their work! Thank you, admins! - Lisa Hoppman
